The sport management degree offers three unique emphases: As you continue through the program, you will experience heightened professional development while gaining valuable event management and game-day operation experience on campus and working with a number of off-campus sporting organizations.
At the end of your academic career, you will venture off to a professional sport organization for a semester-long internship, which then leads to graduating as a qualified and experienced sport professional. Coaching Certification The coaching certification curriculum begins with foundational courses on sport psychology and sociology and athletic injury management and then progresses, allowing you to delve more heavily into the sport sciences, including strength and conditioning, biomechanics, sport nutrition, and coaching strategies.
As you continue through the program, you will begin to develop your own coaching philosophies and your coaching eye, while gaining valuable coaching experience through in-house camps, clinics, and team coaching, as well as off-site coaching opportunities. At the end of your academic career, you will venture off to a semester-long coaching internship, which then leads to graduating as a qualified and experienced athletic coach.
Ministry Emphasis The ministry emphasis curriculum begins with foundational courses on sport psychology and sociology and sport economics and then allows you to study a combination of evangelism and discipleship, while partnering with sport operations and recreation programming. As you continue through the program, you will deepen in your commitment of the Lord's calling in your life through sport ministry experiences both on campus, within the community, and in real-world settings.
At the end of your academic career, you will be prepared to do kingdom work using sports as a tool and platform to serve the King through a semester-long internship, which then leads to graduating as a qualified and experienced sport minister. Hands-On Experience Sport events - While studying sport management, you will work multiple events for the athletic department and other non-NGU sport-related events across the Upstate.
Upon reaching the final semester of your degree program, you will have worked a minimum of seven semesters, managing at least 28 different sporting events while receiving valuable event management and behind-the-scenes experiences. In the world of sport, experience is almost as important as knowledge, which makes the Volunteer Practicum a great resume enhancement.
Business planning - You will also develop your own sport business by writing a business plan in the facility course and develop your own PR plan in the Sport Communications course. You will also develop your own sporting event to be produced on campus and marketed to the campus community. You will publicaly debate sport ethics matters in the Sport Ethics course.
Internship - Upon satisfactory completion of all coursework, you will qualify for a credit internship. The final semester of the program requires you to work in an internship program at a sport business of your choice. You will work a minimum of 16 weeks for 40 hours per week, culminating in a hour internship experience.
Once you have successfully completed the internship, the degree requirements are satisfied for graduation, and you will immediately become available for employment. Some of our interns have even been hired prior to completing their internship. Faculty Strengths Sport Management Department faculty members are highly credentialed and qualified, steeped in diverse industry experience and research backgrounds.
The entire group shares a combined years of marketplace experience in the sport profession in the areas of collegiate athletics, YMCA and private sport facility management, aquatics and fitness programming and management, coaching and athletic training, legal and business consulting, and research.
Furthermore, the faculty remain committed to the sport profession, staying abreast of current and relevant industry issues and standards, which allows them improved student advising, enhanced industry-relevant projects, more realistic case examples in class, stronger industry connections, and improved networking both locally and nationally.
The faculty's diverse marketplace experiences, research interests, and expertise add depth to the program, increase the number of industry contacts for internships and jobs, and create opportunities for the student to work on individual projects with a faculty member in his or her area of expertise.
